Velme E. Baker School programs for all students in our community. We have a very diverse population and to ensure our educational programming meets the needs of all of our students we offer some programs that are specialized.
We have a Levelled Literacy Intervention (LLI) program for those students needing extra support in their literacy learning.
We also implement English as a Second Language (ESL) strategies for students needing ESL support.
Our staff have also been training in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. UDL is an educational framework based on research in the learning sciences, including cognitive neuroscience, that guides the development of flexible learning environments that can accommodate individual learning differences. This training provides staff with strategies to accomodate the learning needs of diverse classrooms.
We seek to foster character and leadership development in our students through the implementation of our Leader in Me program. The Leader in Me teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.
