    School Philosophy

Our philosophy is to develop students who are knowledgeable about 21st Century literacies and the importance of active student engagement and taking ownership for their learning and behaviour. We believe that this can be achieved through: exemplary staff performance, parental support and excellence in student achievement. We believe in the importance of supporting our students as they strive to become the following: active learners, who work towards standard of excellence in knowledge, skills and attitudes in all subject areas; progressive and flexible decision makers, who commit to pursue lifelong learning to achieve goals; self-directed individuals, who develop into responsible and confident individuals displaying initiative and the ability to get along with others; team participants, who make wise choices; ethical and respectful citizens, who are caring and responsible; effective thinkers, who demonstrate the skills of creative, flexible and critical thinking, independent reasoning and problem solving. We want to support our students as they achieve their best potential and support them on their journey of Growing into Greatness.

velmaWelcome to the 2017-18 school year at Velma E. Baker. Our building is the heart of the neighborhood, offering opportunities for various community sports and activities. Our school is named after Velma E. Baker, a retired and respected Edmonton Public Schools custodian. Mrs. Baker is highly regarded and recognized for her leadership and charismatic people skills. She made significant contributions to our school district and positively influenced the lives of many students and staff. Throughout the year Mrs. Baker and her family join us for school events.

We would like to share the rationale behind our school logo and tagline, Growing into Greatness, which work in parallel. The letter ‘V’ in the school’s name forms a simplified figure with outstretched arms scattering a stream of stars. This represents a whimsical and playful character sprinkling and sharing positive energy, as well as, a child’s innocence and playful spirit. It is directly related to the school’s use of the book, Have You Filled a Bucket Today?, which we have used as a kind of a spirit and life guide to ground our Character Education Program. The use of colours further alludes to the positive atmosphere and diversity within the school. The logo also speaks to who our namesake, Mrs. Velma Baker, is and what she is all about: warmth, caring and a positive spirit.

This website provides parents with general information about the school. We use SchoolZone, a secure information system developed by Edmonton Public Schools, for most of our information and communication materials. It is designed to enhance communication between home and school and is available any time, and anywhere in the world there is Internet access. Parents receive a password to this web portal to access classroom information, newsletters, progress reports, school programs and activities and much more. For specific information parents are encouraged to contact their child’s teacher or our school office.

Principal's Message

Welcome to Velma E. Baker School.  Our school staff is a dedicated group of people continually going the extra mile in their quest to ensure that all kids succeed.  Our school motto is “Growing into Greatness” and we believe that all children can experience academic success and personal growth.  We value and embrace the diversity that makes up our school community and feel that this diversity is what helps to create the warm, respectful, compassionate and dynamic learning environment that exists at Velma E. Baker School.

Our family like learning environment is further strengthened by our parent community.  We encourage parents to be actively involved in their child's education and in the life of the school. We know that parents play a key role in helping their children to develop the attitudes they need to experience success at school.  One of the areas that we always encourage parents to become involved in is on our School Council.  If you would like to attend a meeting or serve on the School Council please call me or come out to a monthly meeting.  The meeting dates can be found on our school calendar which is posted to our school website and included in our newsletters.

We look forward to working with the families in our school community as we grow into greatness together!

Mr. D. Sweeney
